New +1 Button in Google Search

Google\’s new +1 buttonGoogle has taken its commitment to making its searches user-friendly to another level with the introduction of a new “+1” feature that is currently in the experimental mode. Appearing in quick succession after the implementation of their “website blocking” service, this one (similar to the Facebook “like” button) is their first step in the world of social media on their search engine platform.

“Today we’re taking that a step further, enabling you to share recommendations with the world right in Google’s search results. It’s called +1—the digital shorthand for ‘this is pretty cool.’ To recommend something, all you have to do is click +1 on a webpage or ad you find useful,” says an insider from Google.

To check out this feature, you need to sign in to your Google account and sign up for their “experimental search site.” Once you do that, you will get to see the “+1” tab next to the search result. Then you can recommend a particular website to others on your Google “contacts” list by simply hitting the +1 sign. For instance, if you have +1’ed  www.promodirect.com after signing into your account, whenever anyone in your contacts is looking for promotional products on the net, Promo Direct will show “+1 like” from you and consequently will be recommend to your friends and contacts.

Google spokesman says, “The beauty of +1’s is their relevance—you get the right recommendations (because they come from people who matter to you), at the right time (when you are actually looking for information about that topic) and in the right format (your search results).”

Facebook introducing new service similar to Groupon

Facebook, is testing a new business platform that will help it to venture into business deals with local small businesses in selected cities. Earlier in the month, the social networking giant wrote on its wall, “We’re testing a new Deals feature that brings you offers from nearby businesses, which you can share with your friends”. This feature is currently being test run in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco.

Former to this systematic targeting to increase businesses on its platform, Facebook allowed small businesses to have a dedicated “business page” where they could advertise their offers and schemes. However, users who wanted to know more about these offers had to visit those specific pages. This new application by Facebook will remove the need to visit specific pages and make receiving offers and deals more convenient. Similar in functioning to “Groupon”, this application however, will bring offers right on the walls of the users. Once a local business makes a deal with Facebook, it will be able to publish the details of their offers on the homepage of users.

Could it be true? Could Facebook really shut down?

By now you’ve probably heard the news that Facebook might be shutting down in March 2011. Like me, you were probably extremely shocked upon hearing the news. Indeed, for most people around the world now, imagining life without Facebook is simply impossible.According to a report on weeklyworldnews.com, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and President, Facebook, said in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office that, “Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”Indeed, as the movie ‘The Social Network’ released in 2010 depicted, Facebook has affected his few true relationships and it appears that Facebook is all Zuckerberg really has in his life now.But owning Facebook is certainly a big deal. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around $ 41 billion. Facebook reportedly has more than 500 million active users around the world.With statistics like this it seems unbelievable that Zuckerberg would want to shut down Facebook. It comes as no surprise then that a day after weeklyworldnews.com published the story that Facebook was shutting down, mashable.com published a contradicting story that Facebook is most certainly not shutting down in the near future.The mashable.com story claims that Facebook Director of Corporate Communications, Larry Yu confirmed that the rumor is false. Yu said, “The answer is no, so please help us put an end to this silliness.” He added, “We didn’t get the memo about shutting down and there’s lots to do, so we’ll just keep cranking away like always.”

According to this story, Facebook had announced just a few days ago that it will be receiving funding consisting of $450 million from Goldman Sachs and $50 million from Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies.

Mashable.com concludes its story by wondering if people will believe anything?

As a teenager I loved the garage sales in my neighborhood primarily because they stimulated and satiated my curiosity. I have purchased some really amazing stuff from these sales over the years and some of them still stay with me, as fond collectibles. Facebook’s Marketplace is a treasure trove of online business opportunities as one can find the exact product you are looking for and also sell the exact product that someone out there is scouting!
