New +1 Button in Google Search

Published by under News,Social Media

Google\’s new +1 buttonGoogle has taken its commitment to making its searches user-friendly to another level with the introduction of a new “+1” feature that is currently in the experimental mode. Appearing in quick succession after the implementation of their “website blocking” service, this one (similar to the Facebook “like” button) is their first step in the world of social media on their search engine platform.

“Today we’re taking that a step further, enabling you to share recommendations with the world right in Google’s search results. It’s called +1—the digital shorthand for ‘this is pretty cool.’ To recommend something, all you have to do is click +1 on a webpage or ad you find useful,” says an insider from Google.

To check out this feature, you need to sign in to your Google account and sign up for their “experimental search site.” Once you do that, you will get to see the “+1” tab next to the search result. Then you can recommend a particular website to others on your Google “contacts” list by simply hitting the +1 sign. For instance, if you have +1’ed  www.promodirect.com after signing into your account, whenever anyone in your contacts is looking for promotional products on the net, Promo Direct will show “+1 like” from you and consequently will be recommend to your friends and contacts.

Google spokesman says, “The beauty of +1’s is their relevance—you get the right recommendations (because they come from people who matter to you), at the right time (when you are actually looking for information about that topic) and in the right format (your search results).”

So we want to know what this means for online businesses. Here is how it will impact them:

  • User power and website ranking: With the +1 feature and easy means to block the website, Google has given power over the fate of online businesses to its users. If your website is not preferred by users, you run the risk of getting blocked or not getting a much-coveted +1 preference, thereby affecting traffic and sales.
  • +1, a part of Google Algorithm: Google plans to make +1 feature a part of their algorithm. They believe that if the users like a particular website, it gives them a good reason to rank it higher than others. So one more thing to keep you on your toes while worrying about where you rank in Google searches.

Google’s +1 feature promises to create a great user experience for its loyalists, though websites and businesses might have another take on it! Let’s wait and watch…

Facebook introducing new service similar to Groupon

Published by under Social Media

Facebook, is testing a new business platform that will help it to venture into business deals with local small businesses in selected cities. Earlier in the month, the social networking giant wrote on its wall, “We’re testing a new Deals feature that brings you offers from nearby businesses, which you can share with your friends”. This feature is currently being test run in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco.

Former to this systematic targeting to increase businesses on its platform, Facebook allowed small businesses to have a dedicated “business page” where they could advertise their offers and schemes. However, users who wanted to know more about these offers had to visit those specific pages. This new application by Facebook will remove the need to visit specific pages and make receiving offers and deals more convenient. Similar in functioning to “Groupon”, this application however, will bring offers right on the walls of the users. Once a local business makes a deal with Facebook, it will be able to publish the details of their offers on the homepage of users.

The development of this feature is a boon for small businesses especially those planning new online business ideas. For local businesses, the opportunity to publish offers on a platform as popular as Facebook is sure to   boost sales. Businesses can innovate promotional ideas which will promote their businesses without too much added cost. Analysts believe this marketing strategy could prove to be as successful as the use of promotional products in generating business for small, local businesses.

When Facebook pioneered itself as a social networking site, it brought a lot of long lost friends together. Its wonderful business page, brought success to several businesses as they could understand and interact with their clientele and market their new business ideas to them, directly. With the advent of this new business application, this giant is all set to bring a new revolution in business strategy and change the course of online marketing.

The glory of this site is such that it has become unavoidable for anyone to not take interest in it.Facebook started its journey in the year 2004 as an internal social networking website for the Harvard University. With easy success as an intranet service, the potential of the website was expanded as it stepped out and made appearance in the world beyond the university doors. Could it be true? Could Facebook really shut down?

Published by under News,Social Media

By now you’ve probably heard the news that Facebook might be shutting down in March 2011. Like me, you were probably extremely shocked upon hearing the news. Indeed, for most people around the world now, imagining life without Facebook is simply impossible.According to a report on weeklyworldnews.com, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and President, Facebook, said in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office that, “Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”Indeed, as the movie ‘The Social Network’ released in 2010 depicted, Facebook has affected his few true relationships and it appears that Facebook is all Zuckerberg really has in his life now.But owning Facebook is certainly a big deal. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around $ 41 billion. Facebook reportedly has more than 500 million active users around the world. With statistics like this it seems unbelievable that Zuckerberg would want to shut down Facebook. It comes as no surprise then that a day after weeklyworldnews.com published the story that Facebook was shutting down, mashable.com published a contradicting story that Facebook is most certainly not shutting down in the near future. The mashable.com story claims that Facebook Director of Corporate Communications, Larry Yu confirmed that the rumor is false. Yu said, “The answer is no, so please help us put an end to this silliness.” He added, “We didn’t get the memo about shutting down and there’s lots to do, so we’ll just keep cranking away like always.”

According to this story, Facebook had announced just a few days ago that it will be receiving funding consisting of $450 million from Goldman Sachs and $50 million from Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies.

Mashable.com concludes its story by wondering if people will believe anything?

As far as I’m concerned, both stories seem to have some truth to them. And with Mark Zuckerberg, you really never know. So what do you think; will Facebook shut down soon? And if it does, how would it impact your life and business?

Online business opportunities on Social Media – The Facebook Marketplace

As a teenager I loved the garage sales in my neighborhood primarily because they stimulated and satiated my curiosity. I have purchased some really amazing stuff from these sales over the years and some of them still stay with me, as fond collectibles. As an adult I got to experience the teenage rush of visiting garage sales yet again – at the Facebook Marketplace.

Just imagine. A lane filled with garage sales, a variety of used products being offered at really low price and buyers and sellers who know each other because they are all a part of a common network. Facebook’s Marketplace is a treasure trove of online business opportunities as one can find the exact product you are looking for and also sell the exact product that someone out there is scouting!

Though FB’s Marketplace allows you to place classifieds without any charge, don’t be under the impression that:

Step 1 – I post a classified ad & Step 2 – I get many responses. There are a lot of intermediary factors that have to be considered if Step 1 has to lead to Step 2. Like…
  • Facebook Ads – for effective and inexpensive small business advertising

FB offers you space to post your ads in the Marketplace at costs that you can define according to your budget. Once you have placed your bid for that ad space, FB tells you how many advertisers trying to reach out to an audience similar to yours, are vying for that space. That way you get to know how much more you should bid to win that space and that amount will be the one that you shell out for every click or per 1000 impressions on your ad. Want to know more about small business advertising on Marketplace – Getting Started Guide.

  • Buy/Sell as an Individual user rather than as a company:

The Marketplace encourages individual Facebookers to market their wares rather than company profiles. However, you can include the link to your official Facebook page in your classified ad.

  • Show what you want to sell:

First define the category your product/ service falls under and then show the prospective buyer what they are getting to buy. Upload a clear photograph of the product, a color snapshot would be ideal and post it alongside your classified ad.

  • Give away stuff

Everybody likes free stuff and promotional giveaways are one of the best ways to win over potential clients. The Give It Away section can be used to give away samples of your product, free catalogs and inexpensive promotional items.

  • Avoid choking

Advertise one or at the most two products at a time. Your company may be dealing in a host of items but in the Marketplace you will be able to advertise better if you put up only a couple of items up for sale. You can always include your contact details and a brief line about ‘we also deal in…’ at the end of your classified ad whereby interested buyers can contact you.

  • Keep Looking

Its all about brand positioning. Monitor the pages where your products or services are listed. A ready-made database of potential consumers is ready for your use and it will only be a matter of time before you get responses.

And for those of you who are still wondering about what happens to sites like Ebay or Craiglist in the face of such virtual garage sales like the Marketplace which offers a simplified process of buy and sell, a latest bit of news defines my answer.

According to news reports, Facebook Inc has raced ahead of eBay, and become the third largest US Internet business!
