The Real Magnitude Of Walmart

How much do you know about Walmart? We certainly didn’t know enough…that is until now! Very few know what a leviathan this largest retailer in the world really is. Check out some of the stats that blow your mind away:

  • If we were to mark Walmart’s revenue as national GDP, it would be the 25th largest economy in the world!
  • If all of Walmart’s stores were to be lined up side by side, all of Manhattan’s 880 million square feet would be covered!
  • Walmart commands the second largest active military in the world!…that is if all of its 2,100,000 people are commissioned in the army!
  • It’s 8000 delivery trucks burn 118 million gallons of fuel each year.
  • CEO Michaels makes more in an hour than his sales associate will in a year!

Google Needs To Clean Up Its Attic To Avoid Becoming Another Microsoft

How is Google like Microsoft? Both have one core business that they took and built ‘the empire’ upon. With Google it’s Google Search and for Microsoft, Windows is what has dominated the market. Goes without saying that these core products are immensely profitable, create great cash flow and contribute to the larger part of the revenue of their parent companies.

However, beyond these core businesses the two global leviathans have something else in common, and that is what the late Steve Jobs advised Larry Page about. Steve cautioned Larry, “Figure out what Google wants to be when it grows up…What are the five products you want to focus on? Get rid of the rest because they’re dragging you down. They’re turning you into Microsoft.”

Facts show that Google is becoming a Microsoft clone with several non-functional, unloved, forlorn, ‘once-ran’ products that are dead weight it has been dragging. However, Google seems to have taken up Job’s advice and is killing all its victim products.

Google CFO Patrick Pichette said, Google will “feed the winners” and “starve the losers” once they have given an opportunity to each of the units to compete for users. Here’s a list of some of the products and experiments that are being tossed overboard: Google Wave, Knol, Google Search Timeline, Google Bookmarks List, Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal, and Google Friend Connect.

Yahoo! Going…Going…Gone?

Yahoo’s struggles to keep its head above the water might soon be the last it can make. The huge web presence it once commanded with a global audience allowed it to build a relatively profitable and growing business, but it could not sustain the magnificence for long. Now for some time several big boys like Microsoft and Silver Lake Partners have been eyeing Yahoo!

In February 2008, Microsoft attempted to buy the US web giant for $44.6 billion, but Yahoo! rejected the even higher offer price of $33 per share. Along, with Silver Lake Partners and Microsoft, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and venture capital firm Andreesson Horowitz also wanted to acquire as much as 15% of Yahoo!

What has truly hogged news headlines is Alibaba wanting to take over Yahoo! The former, a Chinese firm, is owned 43% by Yahoo! and is considered one of its greatest assets. Alibaba Group Chairman, Jack Ma, and Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang are known to be good friends. However, Ma feels the company has surpassed and outgrown its US partner.

Alibaba has repeatedly been trying to buy out the 40% of its share that Yahoo! currently owns and has been ready for quite some time for taking over Yahoo! with its financing all sorted. Now Alibaba is leading an investment group and together they are going for all of Yahoo! Says Ma, that they are waiting for a “friendly bid” rather than an aggressive takeover.

What’s Happening Now?! Google Will Tell You!

Google says that the new “freshness updates” algorithm is sensitized to the fact that people want the most ‘new’ update on things. A favorite recipe might rank high but compared to this, latest news and events would command the higher ‘freshness’ quotient. Google would show search results that are just a few minutes old right at the top of search results! Google claims that this update will impact approximately 35% of search results.

Even if you do not punch in the appropriate keywords for latest news and developments on things like presidential elections, sports updates, or stocks and finance updates, Google now understands that you would want to see the most recent news and will deliver just that!

The freshness update algorithm is taking the Caffeine update from last year to the next level. Caffeine was an improved search function that allowed Google to index content faster.

Earlier this year Google came out with Panda that weeded out sites that populated Google with low-quality results.

However, Google has now evolved in the understanding that what people more often want and are looking for are results that have immediate relevance—what is happening ‘now!’ That is what qualifies a relevant search, one which brings users fresh and new information.

Persuasion vs Passion-What Works To Increase Sales

Tired of rallying up leads? After countless sleepless nights over driving “organic traffic” to your website and watching the horror of how few convert into sales both on your website and off-page as well, you have probably laid down arms now on increasing sales!

You ask yourself, “Where am I going wrong? I created the perfect business…have the perfect sales pitch…have been sending the newsletters, catalogs, and highlighting the cheapest products, the best quality products….then where is the smelly skunk that’s turning away conversions?”

The answer might just be looking you in the face without you knowing it. Pestering people to buy doesn’t work. That is a fundamental principle of marketing. People love to buy but they do not to like to be told to buy! Your pitching your products and services in every communication with your customers is simply not going to work. Persuasion is an uphill task and can eventually help to convince people to buy.

But what works effortlessly is your conviction about your product or service. If you love what you do, are passionate about your offering, about your product, your buyers will naturally be drawn to you and your business! People who are passionate do not need to run after others to have them buy their product. Can you imagine Bill Gates or the late Steve Jobs pitching and pestering people into buying their product? The idea itself sounds silly!

In fact, citing those very examples shows us something. We all are drawn to passionate people like moths to a flame, simply because they believe in what they have to offer and love what they do.

The more convinced you are about your product and service the more people will believe in it and will want to procure it. Confidence and passion are the keys you need in business, and not just a great sales page and pitch!
